You Can't Flush Toilet Paper

In your room you will find a very modern and Western-style toilet, sink, and shower. Likewise, you will find the toilets and showers elsewhere on the resort to be very modern and normal to you. Due to the size and limitations of the resort's on-site waste-water treatment facility, you will find that the toilets are not designed to handle toilet paper (or flushing anything else but your #1 and #2, really).

What to Do with Toilet Paper

Next to every toilet is a small trash can. You should use this to dispose of your used toilet paper. It may seem strange at first, but it's a common practice in many parts of Mexico and other countries. The plumbing systems in these areas are not designed to handle toilet paper, and flushing it can lead to clogs and plumbing issues. If you feel terrible about it, tip your maid and use the trash can. It's a small adjustment that helps keep the plumbing in good working order.
