El Cedral and Ruins

About 4km East of the resort is a very tiny village called El Cedral. At one point in time, it was the island's capitol city and a bustling center of Mayan life dating back to 800 AD, and a center of trade and commerce. Now, it is a cultural and historical site with a small population and a very modest ruins site. The ruins are mostly some very small rock walls and single small structure. Just the same, any still standing structure from the year 800 is a marvel of Mayan engineering and construction. It is a quiet place to visit if you're not their during their two annual festivals (April/May). Around the ruins is a small church, and a few small souvenir shops. It's a nice walk/jog from the resort.
