What Should I Pack for Clothing?

Maybe I can save you some weight in your suitcase with this list of things I've learned about packing for a trip to Cozumel. For your consideration:

Casual Wear

Consider the location on the globe and the time of year. It is the tropics, and cotton, linen, and rayon are your friends. Think light and breathable fabrics.

Evening Wear

Some restaurants at the resort have a dress code for the evening. You'll want at least one change of evening wear to dress slightly nicer than your causal wear. It's not formal by any means, but it can be nice to have a few meals not subject to dripping bathing suits.

Swimwear

It's a family friendly resort, but I've seen all manner of one and two-piece swimsuits. Bring what you like. That said, do not forget to bring your swimsuit! Buying one from the gift shop will be expensive, and the selection is limited.

Sunglasses

Obviously, sunglasses are a must. You will be getting a lot of UV exposure thrown right at your eyeballs, and you need to defend them. You can get away with cheap sunglasses, but you should consider the following:

  • UV Protection: Look for sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. This is the most important feature.
  • Polarization: Polarized lenses reduce glare from reflective surfaces like water, making them ideal for outdoor activities.
  • Lens Color: Different lens colors can enhance contrast and reduce glare. Gray lenses are neutral, brown and amber lenses can enhance contrast and depth perception.

Hats

I'm like 90% sure that you're going to want a hat while in Cozumel. I mean, fingers crossed the sun does it's tropical thing and gives us perfect tans and diving days, but it can be hot and bright. Going for a walk around the resort, or out to el cedral makes it a necessity. Even if you are under shade by the pool, a hat can improve scrolling poolside by reducing the glare on your phone. Do you not have a hat? How do you even know who you really are? I promise there is a hat(s) out there that looks amazing on you and sends the right message to the world.

Don't know where to start?

You want to meet a basic criteria of both form and function in a hat:

  • Fit: Firstly, ensure the hat fits.
    • It should be comfortable, and seems wearable for long periods.
    • it should fit securely, or be securable to your clothing.
  • Style: Choose a style that complements your wardrobe and personal taste. Anything without a full brim will still need to be paired with sunglasses.
    • Wide-Brimmed Hats:
      • Sun Hat: A wide-brimmed hat that provides shade and protection from the sun.
      • Straw Hat: A lightweight, breathable woven straw.
    • Caps:
      • Baseball Cap: A casual cap with a curved brim, often adjustable. Doesn't cover your ears, though.
      • Bucket Hat: A soft, wide-brimmed hat that provides sun protection. Make sure it's breathable!
    • Fashion Hats:
      • Fedora: A stylish hat with a wide brim and indented crown. You can find these in straw! Limited brim, limited coverage.
      • Panama Hat: A lightweight, breathable hat made from straw, perfect for warm weather. Looks good on most people.
  • Material: Look for lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton weaves or straw.

Trying on first is best, and I suggest shopping department stores like Nordstrom Rack. Ross and TJ Maxx are also good places to check. If you're fond of a particular outfitter brand (e.g. Columbia, Patagonia, etc.), you might stop into their stores and outlets. REI as well.
